Mr Farage – an outspoken supporter of the UK’s exit from the European Union – is seeking to change the Brexit Party’s name to Reform UK in order to challenge his government’s response to Covid-19.

Senator Sam Mezéc – who founded Reform Jersey in 2014 – said he hoped there would be limited confusion surrounding the names, as the core values of the two parties ‘don’t align’.

‘It’s obviously an extremely unfortunate coincidence,’ said the Senator. ‘Our values have nothing to do with Nigel Farage or his party. I believe his political philosophy is centred around selfishness, whereas ours is all about solidarity.

‘If we are comparable to any party in the UK it would probably be the Labour Party,’ he added. ‘But of course we don’t use the same name.’

Reform Jersey currently has five elected States Members, with Senator Mézec sitting alongside Deputies Geoff Southern, Montfort Tadier, Rob Ward and Carina Alves in the Assembly.
