Mr Ogley told the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry yesterday that he put safeguards in place following one allegation and that in the absence of any direct evidence, it was decided to leave Mr Lundy in the post.

Mr Lundy appeared at the inquiry last year and strenuously denied physically abusing children, labelling the allegations ‘a combination of fabrication, gross exaggeration and imagination’.

He was the head of Jersey’s Education Department from 2008 to 2014 and gave evidence to the inquiry relating to his combined 18-year career as principal and vice-principal of Les Chênes residential school and his three-month secondment to former children’s home Haut de la Garenne.
