JERSEY Football Association chief executive Neville Davidson hopes a ‘new start’ at Fifa will boost the Island’s chances of entering international competitions in the future.

Following the surprise resignation of Fifa president Sepp Blatter yesterday, Davidson has said he would like to see tiered tournaments introduced as the JFA continue to consider an application to enter Uefa.

Neville Davidson: “If you look at sports like cricket and tennis they all have tiered tournaments to suit the level of particular countries”

‘The people at the top have got a lot of things right, but they have also got a few things wrong,’ said Davidson.

‘If you look at sports like cricket and tennis they all have tiered tournaments to suit the level of particular countries. I’ve always said Uefa or Fifa should consider that, and if we did apply we’d want meaningful competition.

‘It could happen, but all these things seem to take time.’

On Blatter’s decision to step down just five days after being re-elected for a fifth term at the helm of world football, he added: ‘The general consensus is that a lot of people are happy for him to go.

‘He has to take responsibility from the top downwards, so he has done the honourable thing … I think it’s good for football. Fifa have to clean up their act and make a new start, as it can’t continue like this with so many rumours.’
