The St Brelade Deputy, who sits on the Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny panel, said the maintenance grant offered to qualifying Islanders, capped at £5,400 a year, falls some way short of the actual cost of living – estimated at £7,500 a year.

Speaking at a hearing with the Education Minister, Patrick Ryan, Deputy Tadier said that the States contribution to students in higher education was below that of Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

He also said and that a review of the grant system in 2010 had shown that financial arrangements were affecting students’ ability to attend university.
