From Deputy Montfort Tadier.

I FIND it necessary to clear up some unhelpful and unfair comments reported by you (JEP, 25 January).

The Constable of St Brelade, Steve Pallett, has accused me of asking a ‘pointless question for political gain.’ I am happy to assure the Constable that nothing could be further from the truth. The only ‘political gain’ I am trying to get is for the young people and families of St Brelade who make use of the very good services of Communicare and its youth club.

Part of my role as a backbencher, indeed as an elected States Member, is to hold the ministers to account. Question time in the States is one of the primary ways we do that.

The answer to my questions could only be given by the minister:

Why are you making the cuts here and are you sure they are well intentioned? Can you assure me that they will not have unintended consequences that may have an adverse effect on the young people of the parish?

These are matters of policy and not ones which can be answered by the good Constable, because he is not responsible for setting Education Policy or ESC budgets.

The point, which came out in my supplementary questions to Deputy Ryan (The Minister) was that the decision to reduce the provision at Communicare was driven by financial considerations, and not necessarily for what was in the best interest of all involved.

I should add that I am not against efficiency savings where they are genuine and well-targeted, but surely the department should be looking at management structure at the top end of the service and not seeking to reduce the number of nights a youth club stays open.

Lastly, I am happy to reassure readers that, despite the impression created by the article, Constable Pallett and I remain on good terms and that we will continue to work closely together to ensure the best outcome for the club.
