No, Mr Warr, over-population is not good for the Island

From John Heys.
MR Warr, the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, stated that ‘Eastern European immigrants are keener to work than locals’ (JEP, 19 March).
Now, this could be due to the fact that they come here in their thousands to work and send their money back home, whereas in many cases locals out of work get financial assistance.
Then he came out showing his vested interest by stating that the media should not go on about Jersey’s rising population, that he thinks this actually benefits the economy, that it is better for the population to be growing than declining, that fear must not be put into peoples’ minds about the population in this Island going over the 100,000 figure, and we should be realistic about it.
Well, Mr Warr, being quite realistic, and obviously it is news to him, we are now grossly overpopulated and suffering all the consequences which have been stated time and time again recently. I can only assume that he has been away from the Island and has missed it.
This ridiculous influx must be stopped, time limited work permits introduced, and excess numbers have to return home.
Then, if there are not numerous Easterners clamouring for jobs in the hospitality industry, locals could be induced to enter the vacancies. Though not always popular, this would surely be better than being out of work.
