Ormers and Scallops of Jersey Limited have lost nearly £5,000 worth of six-month-old ormers after straps on the cage holding the shellfish were deliberately cut.

Manager Marcus Taylor said that the baby ormers, kept in cages on the seabed behind Gorey Castle, would undoubtedly perish because they could not survive unprotected in open sea.

The alarm was raised by Jersey Fisheries on Wednesday 4 May when they discovered parts of the cage floating at sea.
