Hitting back at claims yesterday by the States in-house spending watchdog, the Public Accounts Committee, that his department had let the cost of benefits spiral out of control, Deputy Ian Gorst said that the claims were inaccurate and misleading.
The PAC blamed much of a £32 million overspend by the Social Security department between 2005 and 2010 on income support.
Deputy Gorst said that £7.8 million had been paid out in extra income support benefits since it replaced the parish welfare system on 1 January 2008 because of the economic downturn.
