This was agreed by the States yesterday, and the landmark vote means that GPs will have to show they have kept their training up to date.

Until now, those who went to medical school 40 years ago or more have been under no obligation to make sure their knowledge and skills are up to date.

In return, they will get extra States subsidies and will be allowed to keep practising. The reforms, passed unanimously by the States after being proposed by Social Security Minister Ian Gorst, will see the States pay GPs an extra £4 for each patient they see, at an estimated cost of £1.5m from the Health Insurance Fund.
