In a letter to the Economic Development Minister, the body which promotes the interests of Jersey businesses argues that other local factors cause higher prices.

It lists high land and labour costs, additional transport costs to the Island, loss of shelf life, low economies of scale and the high price of food produced in Jersey as reasons for the differences from UK prices.

It adds that planning regulations have restricted store sizes to keep village shopping centres alive, and suggests that if Islanders want to reduce their food bills, they can shop around and throw less food away.

The letter, a copy of which was sent to the JEP by the Chamber, also suggests that it is naive to think that a new store operator would offer much cheaper prices.
