The petition has been signed by 15 of the 29 active producers in Jersey, and with the debate on changing the law to be heard in the States next Tuesday, the farmers have urged politicians to carry out a risk assessment before changing the 220-year-old law.

Darren Quenault is one of the farmers who helped to organise the petition – which is signed by one of the Island’s biggest producers, Trevor Barrette – and he thinks that because the industry is so divided, a decision should not be rushed.

‘Jersey has been closed to bull semen importation for over 200 years so what is wrong with waiting an extra six months for a risk assessment to be carried out?’ said Mr Quenault.
