The company, which sells CDs, DVDs and other goods online, will take on Apple iTunes for control of the legal download market in the UK, beating rival site Amazon to be the first to take on iTunes.
Play, currently run by Jersey businessmen Simon Perée and Richard Goulding, will offer tracks and albums in direct competition to iTunes.
And the tracks will be offered without software known as digital rights management, which prevents users from copying music or passing it on to friends.
Play has described the move as ‘taking on iTunes in the UK’, offering songs at 65p, with albums at £4.95 – prices which are tax free and, more significantly, lower than Apple iTunes.
