THE States reform committee will fight proposals to end the Bailiff’s dual role as chief judge and Speaker of the States Assembly.

They say that no changes should be made until a full investigation into the impact of ending the historic position is undertaken.

Deputy Shona Pitman (pictured) has lodged a proposition to split the Bailiff’s role up and give an elected States Member the job of running States sittings. A vote of no confidence the Deputy proposed in the current Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, was rejected by 47 votes to three last month.

The Privileges and Procedures Committee, who are responsible for States reform, say that work needs to be done before any decisions are made.
