Does it make a difference if the gift is offered to a junior member of staff, rather than the managing director?

Those were some of the questions posed at a recent event organised by the Jersey branch of the Securities and Investment Institute when members were encouraged to discuss integrity in the workplace.

br>Speaker Simon Culhane, the chief executive of the SII, introduced several hypothetical cases based on real dilemmas, including an instance where an employee of many years was found to have claimed falsely that he had gained an academic qualification.

br>The four key principles of integrity, he said, were openness, honesty, transparency and fairness.

br>Mr Culhane emphasised the value of trust to any business.

He said that a brand built up over many years, such as Northern Rock, could be destroyed in a very short time if customers lost their trust in the firm.

‘We are now seeing a real lack of trust in the markets,’ he said.
