In view of these figures, staff at the recycling department at Transport and Technical Services are urging Islanders not to waste their piles of Christmas rubbish, but recycle them.

Assistant recycling officer Emma Richardson said that cards and wrapping paper could be taken to any of the Island’s paper recycling banks around the Island along with newspapers and magazines. ‘All Christmas cards except the musical variety can be placed into the paper recycling bins,’ she said.

Wrapping paper can also be recycled, but sellotape, tags and ribbons should be removed before it goes into the bins. Cardboard from Christmas packaging can be taken to the Bellozanne recycling centre or to the recycling units at Rue des Prés or Holme-Grown. Food and drink cans, plastic bottles and household batteries can be taken to Bellozanne.
