Police and Customs officers are barely even acknowledging each other, such is the breakdown in communication. The relationship is having an impact on investigations, although politicians are anxious to argue that the security of the borders and the fight against drug trafficking is not being affected. However, well-placed sources have told the JEP that that is not the case and that current investigations are being disrupted. The Joint Intelligence Bureau (JIB), an agency that was set up so that they could work together on targeting criminals, is operating in name only, with officers split down the middle. And although the current crisis has been heightened by the police launching a criminal investigation into Customs officers, it is understood that they have not worked well together for years.
