More than 200,000 students across the British Isles are waiting to get their A-level results on Thursday, and the pass rate is expected to rise this year to almost 97 per cent.

Yesterday a UK report claimed that some candidates getting an A-grade this week would only have been awarded a C or D in 1988.

Independent think-tank Reform wrote the report, which says that 43 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds believe that the exams are easier to pass, compared with only ten per cent who say they have got harder.

Andrew Lewis, chairman of the Jersey branch of the Institute of Directors, said that with more students getting higher grades, pupils needed to make sure they stood out when it came to university or job applications.
