Mark Burby – who recently flew his helicopter over St Ouen’s Bay to capture the Side By Side tsunami charity event – has successfully sued a company run by two members of the family – one of the richest in the world – over a failed attempt to launch a US coffee chain in the UK.
A St Brelade resident, Mr Burby had been hoping to introduce The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf chain to Britain and was approached by Pengiran Ayub, a cousin of the Sultan of Brunei, and his wife, Pengiran Damit, the Sultan’s sister-in-law, about investing in the venture.
But, says Mr Burby, the relationship broke down when the money failed to materialise and he took legal action against the couple, which began in a court in Singapore and concluded in the British Virgin Islands in December.
