Last week OU students in Jersey received a letter from the university which said fees for students in the self governing islands of the British Isles could be ‘considerably higher’ by 1 August 2007.

As a result, OU South Regional Jersey contact Claire Fernandes and Jersey delegate Peter Le Maistre put forward an emergency motion at the Open University Students’ Association conference in Eastbourne at the weekend.

The motion highlighted how concerned Island students were about the proposed increase in OU costs.

It read: ‘While we support the OU’s need to improve funding we would urge the OU to investigate the possibility of a partnership with our local government to offset this significant increase in costs.’ They were supported by the South Region who also put forward an emergency motion expressing concerns about the effect of the proposed cost increase.
