The name was agreed at yesterday’s inaugural meeting of the association held at the Town Hall and attended by about 25 people.

The group has been established to lobby States Members on issues affecting senior citizens.

The meeting unanimously supported a proposal for the association to write to a number of States committee presidents to express dissatisfaction at policies that affect poorer members of society.

However, the meeting, organised by union stalwart René Liron, was not strongly supported by senior citizens.

It is not unusual in Jersey for senior citizens to turn out in force to meetings on weekday afternoons.

Indeed the Senior Citizens Association regularly has well over 100 people at important meetings.

However, those present agreed to elect Mr Liron as chairman and Jim Bushnell as vice-chairman until the end of this year.
