Employment and Social Security Committee president Senator Paul Routier says that if any one of Deputy Southern’s four amendments is carried, his committee will abandon their Appointed Day Act to bring the Employment Law into force on 1 April.

And he says that if the Employment Relations Law fails to get approval from the States tomorrow, his committee will abandon the Appointed Day Act entirely.

Deputy Southern had called on Senator Routier to accept the amendments, which he said were modest and reasonable and designed to make the law more effective.

He said that by accepting them, Senator Routier’s committee would gain the trust of Jersey unions – who have campaigned against the new Employment Relations Law and who plan to protest against them in the Royal Square tomorrow.

But the Senator says that having reviewed the amendments, his committee have decided that they would unbalance the legislation entirely.

His committee plan to fight them all when they come up in the States Chamber tomorrow.
