The Senator failed in his first bid in May, when the States voted by 32-14 to reject his amendment to the fiscal strategy proposed by the Finance and Economics Committee.

He is now making a second attempt, as he believes the original decision was fundamentally flawed.

He also says the arguments used by Finance and Economics were ‘wholly wrong assertions and exaggerated claims’ designed to scare Members into rejecting his proposition.

The States approved the introduction of a 3% across-the-board goods and services tax designed to raise about £45m a year – about half of a projected financial ‘black hole’ that will result from Jersey’s move to a zero-ten corporate tax structure.

Senator Syvret will lodge a proposition tomorrow to amend the decision.

He described the Finance and Economics Committee’s views on the tax as ‘extreme and misguided’.
