‘I was very pleased,’ she said.

‘The last match was tough, but a lot of the people I’d expected to get through were knocked out early on – but that’s fine by me! I’d never beaten Susan before so I was pleased with the way I played.

The points will help my world ranking.’ Cann was seeded six of eight seeds in the competition, in which 32 women played.

She went through to the semi-final with relative ease, without dropping a game, but found the semi-final, against Bulgarian Linda Zechiri, her first real test.

Cann lost the first game 11-5, but turned things around to win the second 11-2.

In the third there was much more of a tussle.

Cann first went 10-8 up and was serving for the match when her opponent suddenly won a flurry of points, and the Jersey player found herself 12-10 down and serving for the match.

But Cann is very strong when she trails in a match, and she came back to win, 13-12, to book her place in the final.

Against Hughes, Cann found herself 10-4 down, but fought back to level 10-10 and set, but Hughes won it 13-11.

However Cann, by this time, had worked out how she should play the Scot, who is ranked 43rd in the world, and she won the second and third comfortably, 11-1, 11-5.

Immediately after the competition in Sofia, Cann went to Denmark to play for her former club there, in a league match.

‘We won.

It was nice to see my old clubmates and I stayed with my friend Solenn Pasturel, who lives there.

I’m looking forward to a weekend off before I go to the Dutch Open next week.

Players there will be higher-ranked than in Bulgaria but I hope to do well and perhaps beat someone that I’m not expected to.’ She added that last year’s Dutch Open was very tough because athletes were still trying to qualify for the Athens Olympics.

‘It should be a bit less hectic this year!’ The win in Bulgaria gives Cann additional ranking points and improves her claim for a place in the England squad to face Germany in a five-match series in November.
