The afternoon in Bournemouth started disapointingly for the Jersey club, with the first of a string of adopted Jerseymen, Mike Ouvarov, losing to Dave Sanger, once a world-ranked player, 6-2, 2-6, 3-6.

However, Caesarean reacted impressively to clinch the next three, with Jack Baker beating Graham Hobbs 6-4, 6-4, Naim Lalji defeating Matt Sanger 6-2, 6-3 and Rhys Hanger overcoming Andy Phillips 6-4, 7-6.

West Hants clawed one back, winning the first of two doubles to leave the home side 3-2 down with one to play and set up a tense finish.

Again Caesarean bounced back to win the last and snatch victory.

Said Caesarean skipper Pablo Giacopelli: ‘Days like these are very rewarding, especially with the fact that to top it all, we have earned the right to play the playoff at home’.

The quarter-final will be played against the runners-up from one of eight regional leagues and staged at Grands Vaux on 10 July.
