SIX water-themed murals will be painted on the arches of the Elizabeth Marina this summer.
ArtHouse Jersey says its new project aims to “breathe new life” into the area while exploring the Island’s evolving relationship with water over time.
The arts organisation has called for creatives from the Channel Islands, the UK, and France to participate and create designs under the strapline of “water water everywhere”. Six artists will be allocated three arches each to paint.
The design process involves workshops with local community groups co-ordinated in partnership with the Harbour Gallery Jersey.
This initiative follows two previous projects around the Harbour, including the Sea Change mural on the Albert Pier by artist Ben Robertson (AKA Bokra) and a 3D-printed “living sea wall” in Elizabeth Marina designed by students.
ArtHouse Jersey director Tom Dingle said that the charity “long considered” the Elizabeth Marina to have potential for artistic expression – an opportunity that has come about thanks to funding from a donor.
Mr Dingle said: “It’s our hope the art breathes new life into this area and shines a fresh and vibrant light on a walkway already loved by Islanders.”
Jersey Water chief executive Helier Smith hopes to promote awareness of water conservation through the initiative and to encourage Islanders to think about their water use.
He said: “Making sure our Island has a sustainable water supply for future generations is a key priority for Jersey Water, particularly with the impact of population growth and climate change.
“We hope the project inspires them to think about their water use today and what the Island needs to secure water for tomorrow.”
Pat Robson, director of the Art in the Frame Foundation, which manages the Harbour Gallery Jersey, said the water mural project was “just up our street” as it aligned with the charity’s aim of supporting up-and-coming local artists.
She added: “This project will breathe new life into the area for the people of Jersey and those visiting the area.”
