ISLANDERS are being urged to only travel if necessary today as work continues to remove storm debris from roads and assess damage to buildings.
Teams from the Infrastructure and Environment departments, and the emergency services, have been clearing roads throughout the last 24 hours, but some remain impassable or partially blocked.
Main roads from the north of the Island into St Helier have been cleared, as have other main roads including St Aubin’s Hill, Mont Les Vaux, Beaumont Hill, St Clement’s Coast Road.
Work is continuing on other main routes, including La Haule Hill, St Clement’s Inner Road, and Grouville Hill. St Saviour’s Hill was still closed at 7.30am today.
- The Airport will remain closed until at least 2pm.
- Many shops are set to re-open. Waitrose in St Helier, which suffered flooding, will stay shut.
- Commodore Goodwill has arrived and shops will be restocked.
- All government schools remain closed.
- Government car parks will be free all day Friday.
- Government sports facilities, parks, Jersey Library and Jersey Youth Service are all closed.
In a statement, the government said: “If it’s safe to do so, Islanders are also asked to check on neighbours, friends, and family members, particularly the elderly and those who are vulnerable.
“Some households have been affected by power outages and a loss of mobile phone services, and operators are working remotely to restore services, and will complete on-site visits when it’s safe to do so.”
