Letters to the Editor: We need a home for convalescence

Former The Limes in Green Street Picture: ROB CURRIE

From Veronica Filleul.

SOME years ago, Jersey decided to demolish our States-run care homes, such as The Limes, Grouville Annex and Sandybrook.

These homes gave very good care to our Islanders who were unable to care for themselves at home. They were deemed not ‘fit for purpose’ and it was decided that they were too expensive to keep them running instead of modernising.

We are left in a position where there is nowhere for our convalescent elderly to go after surgery etc.

We managed to build a huge Nightingale hospital at enormous cost in a few months, so why, oh why, can’t we get a French builder to come and build a 50-bed convalescent home on the Overdale site to take our insultingly called ‘bed blockers’ so that we can get on and rebuild/renovate the General Hospital, which is in the right place and should be an ‘acute hospital’?

As usual, it is the elderly population who are swept under the carpet. If you don’t have a computer or a smart phone you are left in the dark and totally ignored. Not all of us old codgers are useless; just because one is old and ill does not mean that we have not made a mark during our lifetimes.

Come on, government, pull your fingers out and get on with the job.

Just remember, you are the old codgers of tomorrow and I hope for your sake that you are held in higher regard than my generation.
