Letters to the Editor: What incentive does any young person have to start a career in Jersey?

From Denise Stephenson.

ON the subject of the housing crisis, I was gobsmacked to see a recent new two-bedroom bungalow advertised at £910,000.

There was nothing extra special about this property, some parking, a separate kitchen, a bit of a garden and some sea views.

But what incentive does any young person have to start a career in Jersey, and contribute to the upkeep of the Island via taxes, when these are the sort of sums of money needed for what many would describe as a standard place to live?

I have to say that if I were young again, I would turn my back on Jersey in an instant. I am afraid to say that the Island with its low taxes is only tailored for the ultra-wealthy.

Any young person who does not have a privileged upbringing may as well seek a more affordable place to settle down and raise a family elsewhere. Because it will be a lot less stressful.
