Group prepares for ‘savage’ challenge in support of RNLI

But, for a group of six Islanders, this was not enough of a challenge so the friends have added climbing and swimming into the mix.

The Jersey Coasteer Squad is aiming to walk, swim and climb a total of 42 miles around the Island’s coast in 48 hours to raise money for the RNLI.

The six friends came up with the challenge after deciding they wanted to try a more ‘extreme’ and ‘original’ version of the Island Walk.

The group is hoping to start the challenge on the evening of 17 July, beginning at Faulkner Fisheries in St Ouen before climbing around to Grève de Lecq where they will spend the night.

They will then spend the next day completing the full course back to St Ouen in a clockwise direction.

Cameron Pirouet, a member of the Jersey Coasteer Squad, described the idea as ‘savage’.

‘The Island is made up of pristine sandy beaches, lots of treacherous cliff faces and rocky shores. On top of that, we have one of the biggest tidal swings in the world. All of these factors make this challenge particularly insane,’ he said. ‘We have been practising certain sections of the course and some of them, especially the rugged north coast, are really challenging. There is a lot of steep cliff face to climb followed by gulleys we will have to swim – making the challenge extremely difficult.’

Explaining why the group had chosen to support the RNLI, Mr Pirouet said: ‘All of us are heavily involved with the ocean in one way or another.

‘We are an island surrounded by beautiful coast and the RNLI does so much to keep people safe at sea so it only seemed fitting to give back to them.’

He added: ‘Valley Adventure Centre has offered to supply all the equipment we need. We will also have a support boat crew on hand for the swimming legs and have been in contact with the RNLI to make sure the money we raised isn’t used to come and save us.’
