You’re all invited to the Queen’s party

This year’s reception will take place from 7 pm and will be hosted by the Lieutenant-Governor, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, and Lady Dalton.

During the evening Sir Stephen will announce the names of Islanders who have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Although Queen Elizabeth II was born on 21 April 1926 she has another official birthday, which is usually celebrated on the second Saturday of June.

The double birthday tradition dates back to 1748 when George II was on the throne. The king, who was born in November, liked nothing better than a day of official celebrations but the British weather was not conducive to his desire for a big public and military parade in his honour.

The decision was taken that while the monarch could celebrate in private on his actual birthday, the event would be celebrated by the nation in the summer.

This year’s reception, popularly known in the Island as a levée, will take place in the grounds of Government House irrespective of the weather and anyone can attend. The dress code for men is jacket and tie and decorations may be worn.

Music will be provided by La Ronde Concert Band, with a marching display and beating of retreat from the Jersey Pipe Band and the Band of the Island of Jersey.

A 21-gun salute will be fired by the 1781 Jersey Militia in honour of the Queen, and Sir Stephen will lead the loyal toast.

Those attending will be able to park at Government House, with additional spaces available at D’Hautrée House School off St Saviour’s Hill.
