Island blood transfusion cover plan extended

Earlier this year it was announced that Jersey Blood Service, the Island’s only donor centre, would close temporarily so that work could take place to ensure that its facilities were brought up to EU standards.

In February, outgoing Health Minister Andrew Green signed a ministerial decision to renew the States’ licence to collect and prepare blood locally for six months, if stocks were unable to reach the Island from the UK.

He has now signed another ministerial decision to extend that licence.

The ministerial decision says: ‘The minister extended the current manufacturer’s licence to the Jersey Blood Service on the same terms and conditions as the existing licence for a period of three months to provide for the manufacture of blood components in emergency circumstances up until 31 October 2018.’

Refurbishment works to Jersey Blood Service got under way last month and it is expected that the facility will reopen in early July.
