Florian Thauvin’s hat-trick helps Marseille see off Metz in nine-goal thriller

Florian Thauvin scored a hat-trick as Marseille held on for a 6-3 victory despite a late fightback from lowly Metz at Stade Velodrome on Friday night.

The home side, who moved up to second in Ligue 1 as a result, began to show their dominance early on and got off to a great start with two goals in the opening nine minutes from Morgan Sanson and Thauvin.

The France winger was on target with his second a minute before half-time as he tapped in from close range for his 12th goal of the season.

OM continued where they left off after the break as Valere Germain fired Thauvin’s assist into the bottom corner just four minutes in, while Thauvin’s netted another close-range effort to complete his second hat-trick for the club.

Florent Mollet netted a brace for bottom club Metz, either side of Marseille’s 75th-minute sixth from Kostas Mitroglou, while Ibrahima Niane pulled back a third for the visitors at the death but it was too little, too late.
