Jersey Reds: Saracens come from behind to seal first Championship win

Hendon. United Kingdom. 13 March 2021. Brendan Cope (Jersey) kicks the first 3 points of the game. Saracens v Jersey Reds. Greene King IPA Championship rugby. Stonex stadium. Hendon. London. United Kingdom.

Harvey Biljon’s men made the perfect start with a Brendan Cope penalty just 90 seconds in, and went on to pin the hosts in their half in the opening exchanges.

But the former European champions eventually settled and their outstanding broken-field runners eased them into a 24-6 half-time lead, with the bonus point secured.

A brace from Alex Lewington and scores from Elliott Obatayinbo and Duncan Taylor helped banish last week’s shock loss at Cornish Pirates, despite the best efforts of a Reds side containing nine debutants.

There was some solace in the form of a consolation score for Jack Macfarlane, the replacement hooker reacting quickest to Sean O’Connor’s charge down – but the hosts always had an extra gear.

The excellent Obatayinbo added his second, before Rotimi Segun and Jackson Wray rounded off the scoring.

Full report and reaction in Monday’s JEP.
