Back-to-back Siams ‘an exciting option’ for May 2021

Jersey Reds agreed with Guernsey Raiders to postpone this year’s contest until early next May at Foote’s Lane, with the 2021 version being played later that same month at Stade Santander in Jersey. The 2020 contest was due to be held in Guernsey next month but has had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Both clubs had discussed other options, but in the end it was felt that this was the most sensible solution to benefit both clubs.

Said Reds chairman Mark Morgan: ‘When we looked at it, the only real alternative was to do a pre-season curtain raiser in, maybe, August time. But once again the question we asked ourselves was: “are we going to be travelling by then”?

‘It’s all very well to say, “let’s put it on in August’’ – but then it gets cancelled again.

‘We just felt it was better all-round if we said “look, let’s go for some certainty. It’s a good bet that we’ll be good for a year’s time” – so we went with that.

‘We realised, anyway, that it was a pretty good option and that back-to-back games will, actually, be very exciting.’

Morgan confirmed that finance and revenue considerations played a big part in the decision to hold it twice next year rather than an out-right cancellation of this year’s contest to be held in Guernsey.
