The 28-year-old, who has been capped three times by his country, is believed to be in contention for immediate inclusion in Harvey Biljon’s matchday squad as the Reds prepare for their second block of Championship Cup fixtures.

Iona has spent the majority of his professional career in Australia with the likes of Western Force, Melbourne Rising and the Brumbies, although he also has European experience under his belt through French PRO D2 side Béziers and Spanish top-flight club UE Santboiana.

He appeared for Samoa in a trio of Test matches in 2018, against Fiji, Tonga and Germany, and can play at fly-half, centre and fullback.

The Islanders welcome Doncaster Knights to Stade Santander on Saturday afternoon at 3pm, having lost to the Yorkshire club during the first round of group matches earlier this autumn. Hartpury travel to St Peter a week later, before Biljon and Co travel to Newcastle Falcons.
