Canavan to play Hendry, but trouble looms for Jersey snooker

Founded in 1923, the JB & SA was unable to attract a volunteer for the role when it had its annual general meeting two weeks ago. Current Channel Island champion Gary Britton lamented that very few members turned up to the AGM because of a seeming lack of communication which is now threatening snooker’s very existence as a competitive sport on the Island.

Brittons comments come as fellow Islander Aaron Canavan competes alongside some of the sport’s greatest names at the World Seniors Championships, held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. Canavan is set to meet seven-times world champion Stephen Hendry in the quarter-finals on Friday.

‘We couldn’t get anybody to fill in the secretary’s and the treasurer’s position and without the secretary in particular, a committee couldn’t be formed,’ explained Britton.

‘If we don’t get anybody to fill the position on Monday then we’ll have to dissolve the association, which will be nearly 100 years of snooker down the pan.

‘There will be no leagues anymore. We’re affiliated to the English Billiard and Snooker Association so we can enter international competitions, which a few of us do but there will be no individual competitions, no inter-insular matches, they will be no competitive snooker on the Island at all.’

Britton was concerned that only a few fellow players had received an email concerning the predicament the JB & SA found themselves in, with no mention of it on social media or on the association’s own website.

‘They’ve spent nearly £1,500 on a new website and we’ve got a Facebook page up and running and there’s nothing on either of them about this situation which I find amazing. It’s unbelievable,’ he said.

Monday’s meeting, at First Tower Billiards and Snooker Club, is due to start at 7.30pm.
