Netball: Serena makes a splash on Superleague return with Team Bath

The former Jersey junior was making her eagerly anticipated return to the UK’s top netball league after almost seven years away, and rounded off her second debut-weekend for Bath with a player-of-the-match performance against Loughborough Lightning.

Guthrie, who moved to the West Country at the age of 16 and won three Superleague titles before departing for New Zealand and Australia in 2014, helped steer her side to a one-sided 61-29 victory over Celtic Dragons on Saturday, as the country’s elite gathered behind closed doors in Wakefield for rounds one and two.

A 48-44 defeat of perennial contenders Loughborough followed yesterday afternoon, with Guthrie laying down a typically dominant mid-court display. The sides were level at 25 apiece at half time.

‘That was a really tough game,’ said Guthrie after the Lightning triumph.

‘Loughborough are historically a finals side, so we knew it would be a real step up from Celtics and I’m proud that we managed to pull away in the third quarter. It enabled us to keep pushing in the last quarter to give ourselves a buffer. I’m really happy. It was a squad effort.’

Every Superleague fixture will be shown live this season – either on Sky Sports or via the broadcaster’s YouTube channel.
