Football fixtures released, JFA discuss 40-person restriction

The first round of fixtures are due to take place on 5 September in the Jacksons JFA Combination, with defending champions Jersey Wanderers starting their campaign with a trip to Grouville.

Last year’s runners-up, St Ouen, are also on the road in their opening game, with a visit to Jody McCarthy’s much-improved Rozel Rovers side at Le Couvant. The two sides faced each other at the same venue in a friendly only two weeks ago, where the parish side edged it 1-0.

St Paul’s, under new management with Andy Sheppard, are at home to St Brelade, another repeat of a pre-season friendly, played on Tuesday evening – St Paul’s winning a close match 3-2. In the Championship, defending champions St Ouen Reserves take-on last years runner’s up, St John, at home.

On Sunday 6 September the women are in action in the opening round of the Zenith Cup. Channel Islands champions and current cup holders St Lawrence are away to close rivals Rozel, who they beat in the final of last season’s competition, while Jersey Wanderers host Grouville. New club Portuguese United Women must wait an extra week to begin their campaign – against Rozel.

Dragoes de Jersey make their debut in a tantalising Division I game on Saturday 12 September, against Sports Club of Jersey, with Portuguese United’s men starting their season with a home match against Sporting Academics Reserves, at Les Quennevais, on Saturday 19 September.

Meanwhile, the JFA have asked clubs to remain mindful of Level 1 lockdown guidance, which includes a 40-person restriction on gatherings for organised sports events.

‘We’d encourage local clubs to continue to follow the Government of Jersey guidelines,’ a JFA statement read.

‘We share the frustrations of those who want to go and watch games and we’re in discussions with Jersey Sport and the Government of Jersey about the measures that would be required to allow more supporters into matches in the Island.

‘It is great news for grassroots and some non-league football in England that supporters there can begin to return. We will be sharing the latest FA documents with the Public Health officials here in Jersey as part of our ongoing discussions with them.’
