Cassidy calls for county dominance

The Caesareans kick off their debut Southern Counties Cup campaign against the Royal Navy in Portsmouth tonight, and after receiving a bye in the first round a place in the final is already up for grabs.

Cassidy’s men approach the semi-final following a six month break from representative fixtures, but confidence remains that a sixth win in seven games this calendar year is achievable.

Jersey’s top footballers have not played together since drawing 1-1 with Panjab FA, one week after winning the Muratti Vase final against Guernsey in May.

Cassidy said: ‘We’ve had the players in for a month, I’m not worried that they’ve not played since the Panjab game because they have had a lot of football for their clubs and one game with James Scott’s team [Parishes of Jersey FC, affiliated to ConIFA].

‘The Navy is a good county level game for us and 2019 is going to be busy. We should be looking to dominate county football.

‘This time of the year is usually quiet for us unless we are in the FA Inter-League Cup, so it’s great to have a game and the players just want to get out, play and do well.

‘We know the Navy will be a fit, strong and organised side to come up against and they will be playing at home when usually we host them.

‘It’s going to be a challenging game and we will be looking to be more clinical in front of goal than we have been.’

Cassidy has been forced to make changes to his original 15-player squad, for a variety of reasons. Conor O’Shea, Jake Baker, Jack Cannon and Harry Curtis have been replaced by Jack Griffin, junior Sol Solomon, Fraser Barlow and Zeljko Martinovic.

Jersey squad: Euan van der Vliet, Zeljko Martinovic, Craig Russell, Fraser Barlow, Jack Boyle, Michael Weir and Adam Trotter (all St Paul’s), Dan Birrell and Kamen Nafkha (JTC Jersey Wanderers), Calvin Weir, Harry Cardwell, Sol Solomon and Luke Campbell (St Peter) and Karl Hinds and Jack Griffin (Trinity).
