AS expected, Jersey footballers will travel to an Inter Games Football Tournament in Anglesey next year, following the exclusion of their sport from Gibraltar 2019.

The event, which will take place between 15-22 June 2019, is being held as an alternative to the biennial NatWest Island Games, as Gibraltar only have one pitch which is deemed fit for purpose. Jersey officials confirmed their intention to travel this morning.

The Welsh isle of Anglesey [Ynys Mon] stepped in and offered to host the football themselves, as they too are looking to host the Island Games in 2025.

Jersey manager Martin Cassidy said: ‘I’m really pleased we have a tournament to look forward to. It would have been disappointing if nothing had materialised.

‘The idea of the tournament was floated around in Gotland last year and all the islands were definitely keen to take part.

‘Ynys Mon have worked really hard to get this organised and we [Jersey] are delighted and now have something else to aim for.

‘I’m sure it is going to be a good competition and this is exactly what the players want – to play as many games as possible at a high standard.’

Anglesey first announced their footballing replacement plans in November 2016.
