Jersey attack punished by Kenyan Patels

A day after 2023 World Cup Challenge League fixtures involving Hong Kong, Bermuda, Italy and the Kenyans were abandoned due to severe flooding in Muscat (affording them a point each), it all appeared to be going rather swimmingly for the Caesareans under wall-to-wall blue skies – leaving them in a position to at least consider the second of three potential wins off the back of successive defeats.

Uganda and Hong Kong both dished out a sour taste last week but Jersey recovered well to thump Italy on Friday and were well in control on Monday.

Harrison Carlyon (46), Dom Blampied (43) and Corey Bisson (58) steered the Caesareans to 233/5 in their 50-over spell and the bowling unit then had Kenya under the thumb early in the reply.

Julius Sumerauer and Carlyon combined to reduce the Africans to 44/3 in the 11th over, but Rushab Patel and Rakep Patel came in at three and five respectively and flipped the tie on its head in merciless fashion.

Rushab ended on an unbeaten 99 off 121 balls, with Rakep hitting 101 off 106 and sealing victory inside 47 overs with his fourth six for 239/3.

‘It wasn’t our best bowling performance of the tournament so far,’ said Jersey head coach Neil MacRae.

‘We didn’t manage to get the ball in good areas consistently enough and reflecting on the game we thought we’d rather had had another 20 runs.

‘A score of 233 was still defendable on a turning wicket and the players fought hard through 45 overs, but we have to give Kenya credit for the way they batted.’

The defeat left Jersey one off the bottom in Group B, before tomorrow’s concluder against Bermuda. The tournament continues in 2020 and 2021 with two more five-game tournaments against the same nations, forming a 15-game league.
