GB internationals to fly in for discus competition

Jersey athlete Shadine Duquemin – currently ranked third on the UK discus ladder – is due to return to the Island with Great Britain internationals Jade Lally and Kirsty Law as they continue to seek venues capable of hosting ratified competitions during the pandemic.

The trio, who are all coached by Duquemin’s brother, Zane, will make the journey across the Channel this weekend, while 2018 Commonwealth Games finalist and 2019 national shot putt champion Amelia Strickler could join them if an invite to a European competition does not arrive.

Jersey Spartan AC officials are writing to UK Athletics to obtain a competition license for Tuesday 18 August, which is expected to include a caveat that all four athletes must have given a negative Covid-19 test on arrival into the Island.

Shadine Duquemin said: ‘I’m really looking forward to throwing next week in Jersey. Opportunities to compete have been very limited with the UK restrictions so we’re grateful to have been invited to the Island.

‘I always enjoy competing in Jersey and having the two top-ranked British female throwers with me will create some high-quality competitions. We are all in the Ultimate Training Systems squad [under Zane’s leadership] and these will likely be our last opportunities to compete ahead of the British Championships on 4 September. A short competition camp on the Island will be great preparation for us. It will also be a great experience for our local athletes to train and compete alongside our best GB international throwers.’

Lally, who represented Team GB at the 2017 World Championships, threw a season’s best of 59.83m on her first appearance at FB in 2018 – 70cm further than the marked reached at the London Anniversary Games a month earlier, inside the Olympic Stadium.
