‘We must make the most of it’

Mark Morgan has hailed the efforts of those involved in persuading Lions coach Warren Gatland to consider Jersey as a base for the upcoming tour against South Africa, while emphasising the need to capitalise on the opportunity.

A decision on where the 2021 series will take place is due to be made in the coming weeks, with Australia and the Home Nations all prepared to step in. Strive academy in St Peter will likely be used as a hub for the Lions’ players and staff if the quadrennial showpiece is brought to Britain for the first time in 130 years.

‘If it does come to pass I think it will be one of the most significant sporting events that would have ever happened to the Island,’ said Morgan. ‘The economic benefits and the community benefits will be outstanding and I am so thrilled that we’re being discussed.

‘As much as we’ve looked upon the Reds’ pro team as inspiration to our juniors, you’ll magnify that many times by having the [Maro] Itojes of this world here. It will be wonderful for all of our players and an inspiration for our young people. We will have to do the best we can to get the squad in front of as many schools and clubs as we possibly can.’
