Junior team sport to start next week – but adults must wait

Government of Jersey officials announced on Friday that group gatherings for organised sporting activities will increase from ten to 35 from Wednesday 17 February, bringing relief to hundreds of juniors who were forced to abandon their seasons in December. However, all over-18 sport will remain off-limits until at least Monday 8 March.

The group-size limit had initially been set at 30, before it was highlighted by the JEP in a media briefing that 30 would not be enough to stage an 11-a-side fixture with one coach per team, five substitutes per side and at least one official.

An amendment to 35 was subsequently made, minutes before the public press conference began at 3.30pm.

Mild confusion still remained though, given that gatherings of 40 were permitted before Christmas and that groups of 40 will be permitted to congregate from next week for worship.

Indoor sports clubs will not be given the green light to resume until mid-March, at the earliest.

Full story and reaction in Saturday’s JEP.
