First defeat for U16 Jets

First defeat for U16 Jets

The juniors, who were without a handful of players due to school commitments, lost their unbeaten record at the last hurdle through defeats to Bath Cougars and champions Raychem.

Cougars, who have lost just once in nine games, are on course to leapfrog Jets before the season comes to a close, as they lie four points behind, but with two games to play.

Coach Taryn Perkins said: ‘We are so pleased with how the players have progressed this season. They have shown great determination and have supported each other on the journey. It has been a shame to end with two losses but we have far more positives to take take from this season.

‘With most of the squad continuing their U16 campaign next season and some fantastic players coming up from U14s they will be force to be reckoned with.’

In their opening game on Sunday, Jets came from six goals down against Raychem to lead 28-23 at half-time, with Lily Jones scoring all of her second-quarter attempts on goal. However, the Islanders were unable to deny Raychem from creeping back, and tiredness eventually told in a 60-48 loss.

Goalkeeper Natacha Searson continued to impress in the second fixture, against Cougars, but the West Country outfit still built up a healthy lead. A fourth-quarter rally did lift spirits, but it was not enough to prevent a 58-34 defeat.
