Singapore soaking for Jersey cricketers

Having made the 7,000-mile journey a week early to finalise preparations for their Division 4 campaign in Malaysia, Jersey showed signs of adapting well to the hot and humid conditions with an impressive batting display. However, only seven of the squad saw action before being forced off with 47.5 overs under their belts.

Peter Gough top-scored against Singapore Cresents – half of the country’s national side – with his unbeaten 78 steering the Caesareans to 230/6.

Nick Ferraby reached 55 off 54 balls, after Ben Stevens had reached 43 off 35.

The nations were due to meet again today, with Singapore set to deploy the other half of their squad.

‘It was a really good workout,’ said Jersey head coach Neil MacRae.

‘It was a flat, dry wicket and a very humid day in Singapore, and it was exactly what we wanted early in the tour in terms of a batting workout.

‘Peter Gough batted very well considering the heat – that will be valuable time in the middle for him once the tournament starts on Sunday. And Nick [Ferraby] followed up his good form against Kent [last weekend] with a well-made 55, being harsh on the Singapore spinners.’

MacRae added: ‘Obviously we would have preferred to play a full game, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen rain like what we saw [yesterday]. Within 30 minutes the ground was under water.

‘The showers are extremely heavy, but we’re hoping the forecast is right [for today]. There might be storms again later in the day, but it does look more positive.

‘We will look to bowl first if we’re given the option in the morning, to give us a full test with the ball and as a fielding unit.’

Jersey travel north to Malaysia via bus on Thursday, before beginning their WCL campaign against Vanuatu on Sunday.
