Guthrie not fazed by Games injury
SERENA GUTHRIE had to be carried off court by England captain Ama Agbeze after rolling her ankle on the opening day of Gold Coast 2018.
The Roses centre failed to make it to the end of the first quarter in their Commonwealth Games group-stage clash with Scotland, and underwent immediate treatment at the Exhibition Centre while her colleagues secured a 74-28 win.
England Netball officials opted against giving a formal update on the Islander’s condition ahead of today’s match against Malawi [9.30 am UK], but the player herself appeared upbeat.
‘It’s all good,’ said Guthrie last night, alongside confirmation that the injury would not rule her out of the Games.
‘It was great to get out there and have a convincing win today – it was a great team effort. Malawi will be tough, but it’s important we keep improving and building each game.’
Following this morning’s tussle with Malawi, England will meet Uganda, Wales and New Zealand in Pool B, with the latter likely to be the greatest threat to hopes of reaching a first-ever Commonwealth final.
Guthrie and Co were beaten by Jamaica in the bronze medal play-off in 2014.
