Hockey: Ladies spot on in cup quarters

Sport | Published:

THREE saves from goalkeeper Laura Besnard steered Jersey's women to a 3-2 penalty-stroke success over Boston Spa yesterday, earning the Islanders a spot in the last four of England Hockey's Masters (over-35s) Trophy for the third year running.

Having denied the visitors a late winner in normal time – standing firm against Rachel Wilkinson's effort with only 15 seconds remaining – Besnard was beaten just twice in the second shoot-out to take place at Les Quennevais in as many weeks.

Five of Jersey's squad played in the first-team's sudden-death defeat to Kingsbridge and Salcombe last weekend, but strikes from Kerry Rogers, Lisa Grant and Becky Henwood-Darts ensured there would be no repeat result.

The men's O50s were not so lucky, with Stuart Gower's first-half strike not enough to prevent a 3-1 quarter-final loss to Reading in the Masters Cup.

'The girls fought really well and battled right to the end.'
