Future starts set for youth Games return

Sport | Published:

JERSEY will take its smallest ever squad to the Jeux des Îles in Mallorca next week as the Island makes a first appearance at the annual event since 2013.

A team of just 12 youngsters are set to travel to the Balaeric island, competing in tennis, sailing, gymnastics and athletics, but team manager Hugh Raymond, who took 21 athletes to Corsica three years ago, is just pleased to be making a return.

Jersey were unable to send competitors to the youth equivalent of the Island Games in 2014 and 2015 due to rising travel costs and logistical issues.

'It is a small squad, but it's one of those competitions we feel we should be a part of,' said Raymond. 'We didn't want to lose touch with what was going on, because it's an important part of the sporting pattern for youngsters in Jersey.'

Tennis: Antonija Sokic, Natasha Forrest, Aidan Castillo-Varela, Andrew Roxburgh.

Sailing: Clementine Carnegie, Phoebe Le Marquand, Edward Poignand, Finn Rogers.

Gymnastics: Rachelle Flambard, Olivia Dunlop, Katie A'Court.

Athletics: Isaac du Val.

Coaches: Andrew Evans, David Carter and Julia Falle. Physio: Morag Obarska.
