Ground staff cuts to hit Island sports facilities

Derek de la Haye, head of sport for the Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture department, has met with Island football clubs after it was announced that States-employed workers will no longer be able to look after their pitches.

The move comes as part of a States-led ‘restructuring’ process that will reduce the number of groundsmen and divert focus towards public facilities such as Grainville, FB, Les Quennevais and Springfield.

At present, half of the £40,000 annual bill for private football pitch maintenance is paid for by EDTS&C, but in a bid to make savings that support could be ‘phased out’ by 2020.
